This Week in Depth
📍 Exploring the Mycoverse: Braiding Sweetgrass Becoming Naturalized to Place
When: Monday, October 7th from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Where: Arlington Garden in Pasadena, 275 Arlington Dr Pasadena, CA 91105
We're returning to one of the foundational texts that has deeply inspired why we come together at Exploring the Mycoverse. Braiding Sweetgrass has been on the NYT nonfiction bestseller's list for several years straight, and for good reason. Braiding Sweetgrass offers how we can understand the world through a plurality of knowledges: indigenous wisdom, western science, and the wisdom plants and fungi behold. This book taught the Mycoverse so much how to be in better relationship with the land, with our community, and ultimately, how to be in better relationship with fungi – a question that has driven the Exploring the Mycoverse since it's inception three years ago.
🏗 Sustainable Concrete: How to Reduce, Quantify and Specify Carbon
When: Wednesday, October 9th from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM

Join the multi-disciplinary trio at the USGBC California Construction Committee monthly meeting to learn all about sustainable concrete! The Construction Committee provides a space for collaboration to advance sustainability in construction for the greater Los Angeles Region through education, leadership, and equitable access to resources. The materials that make up the built environment are responsible for a significant chunk of the world’s carbon emissions. Leading the way, both in carbon emissions and in necessity, is concrete with cement being at the core of it. The October 9th meeting will feature Brandon Wray, Jessie Buckmaster, and James Little on Sustainable Concrete: How to Reduce, Quantify and Specify Carbon. The multi-disciplinary trio representing different parts of the industry will discuss how early preparation and implementation of performance-based specifications over prescriptive-based specifications can help projects achieve their performance goals while also reducing embodied carbon.
