We are transitioning to the fall season and approaching Sustain-O-Ween season! (best event title award goes to the Backyard Farm!). I’m excited to see the community convening to discuss a greatly diverse number of climate and sustainability topics in all parts of the city, in: Culver City, Arts District/DTLA, Eagle Rock, Mid-City, Malibu and all the way to the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro. Here are our picks this week:
On Wednesday, attend 🔌 LACI's 2028 Clean Energy Roadmap Release Press Event to hear more about the partnership’s roadmap and ways LACI is working to accelerate the move to 100% clean energy while meeting the needs of transportation electrification, building decarbonization, and grid resiliency in the Greater Los Angeles Region by the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Join on Thursday a dynamic conversation around 🏞️ indigenous knowledge, conservation and land return, curated by Celestina Castillo, Executive Director of the Center for Community Based Learning, and Oxy Professor Gretchen North.
On Saturday, California Greenworks presents its second annual 🌇 Climate Equity Series. Join this roundtable discussion that brings together environmental experts, policy makers, non-profits (including -but not limited to- Climate Cents, Climate Resolve, LA Compost, Heal the Bay, Streets for All, Surfrider, Neighborhood and Land Trust, LA Neighborhood Initiative) and you.

🌍 Day 1 of Climate Action Palooza at West Los Angeles College

The California Center for Climate Change Education at West Los Angeles College is hosting a 3-day Climate Action Palooza to promote climate action, decarbonization of economies, and environmental justice. Day 1 includes an opening ceremony, exhibits, a keynote speaker on climate justice and youth activism, a panel discussion with local youth leaders, community building activities, workshops, and a vegan food truck.

🚎 Long Beach CAP Goals: Transit, Governance, and Building Electrification

Where: Anna W. Ngai Alumni Center, 1250 North Bellflower Boulevard, Long Beach, CA
City of Long Beach will discuss ongoing zoning efforts to encourage transit-oriented development, specific plan and zoning updates, and Long Beach Climate Action Plan governance and implementation. Members of the American Institute of Architects – Long Beach / South Bay Chapter’s Committee On The Environment (COTE) will discuss the advantages of transitioning buildings from gas to electric, including essential steps, available financial incentives, and how architects can align designs with the Long Beach Climate Action Plan. The architects of the venue, the CSULB Anna W. Ngai Alumni Center, will be on hand to provide a tour of the building and speak to the challenges and successes of the project. Aleksandra Jaeschke is an architect and Assistant Professor of Architecture at The University of Texas at Austin. She has received several awards and accolades for her work, including the Europe 40 Under 40 Award and the Harvard GSD's Wheelwright Prize. Jaeschke has published a book based on her doctoral dissertation and curated an event series focused on human-plant relations.

The California Center for Climate Change Education at West Los Angeles College is hosting a 3-day Climate Action Palooza to promote climate action, decarbonization of economies, and environmental justice. Day 3 includes an agenda with conference check-in, breakfast, opening remarks, a keynote speaker, two panels, the unveiling of an internships database, lunch, and breakout sessions covering various topics related to blue economy, food science, natural resources, habitat restoration, transportation, and socially responsible buildings.

California Greenworks presents its second annual Climate Equity Series, a roundtable discussion that brings together environmental experts, policy makers, and the general public. October 28th features US Representative Sydney Kamlager-Dove discussing environmental justice on the federal level and its implications for Los Angelenos. Nonprofits, including Climate Cents, Climate Resolve, LA Compost, Heal the Bay, and more, will be present. Another talk will be held on November 18th. Special thanks to participants!
🌝 Climate Café + Full Moon Ritual

As autumn settles in, it's important we reflect on the ecological cycles taking place not only outside, but inside of ourselves as well. Moon ritual helps us tune into eco-cyclical living and learn from Mother Earth's divine wisdom. Climate Cafés are a supportive and welcoming space for facilitated conversations to bring people together. Our intention is to discuss climate change, and our thoughts and feelings around it, without fear or judgement. While we need and have groups working through activism, protest, or advocacy, the Climate Café model fills an additional need: a space not about action, where thoughtful discussion, repressed emotions, and solidarity can emerge.
🧬 eDNA Community Science Event
When: Sat, Oct 28th from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM
Where: Westward Beach, Malibu
Interested in meeting volunteers and participating in cutting-edge science? Heal the Bay is partnering with UCLA again to collect sea water samples in Malibu for an eDNA scientific testing program with PhD candidate, Moriah Byrd. All marine life leaves traces of DNA in their environment. eDNA water testing analyzes the quantification of biodiversity in a standardized way within a marine ecosystem, making it an incredible tool to monitor Marine Protected Areas.
