Thanksgiving is around the corner! We counted so many events and opportunities to connect this week. We are grateful for the hosts and the organizers’ efforts to provide us with meaningful spaces to gather and chances to learn something new. Cheers to them! Here are our picks for this week:
Today (Wednesday), bring your e-waste, beverage containers, and compost to be sorted and recycled at the 🔄 America Recycles Day Fair (Los Angeles State Historic Park)!
On Friday and Saturday, attend💧LA Walks of Resilience and Accountability. In partnership with the Owens Valley Indian Water Commission, Walking Water will explore what it would mean for Los Angeles to be water independent (Nr. Griffith Park).
On Saturday, explore the future of clean energy and the intersection of equity, environmental impact, and economic growth at the ⚛️ Open House: Women in the Hydrogen Revolution (AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles).

America Recycles Day Fair
Today, stop by the LA State Historic Park and meet experts in recycling from LA Sanitation & Environment, CalRecycle, and the LA Conservation Corps to learn about proper recycling practices. At this community fair, you can drop off your e-waste, beverage containers, and compostable waste to be sorted and recycled by their crews. This event is hosted by the LA Conservation Corps, an environmentally focused youth development non-profit organization. By offering paid work experience on green community projects and innovative after school, secondary and vocational education programs, the organization strive to build resilience in the youth and young adults of Los Angeles and in the neighborhoods they call home. 💧 LA Walks of Resilience and Accountability

In November 2023, Walking Water and the Owens Valley Indian Water Commission will hold two one-day walks in Los Angeles City to explore water independence and the impact on the Paiute and Tongva peoples. Elected officials and experts will join to share and listen, with a focus on creating a resilient and accountable LA. The event examines the historical injustices and the need for sustainable water futures in the face of climate change.

👩 LA Chapter Inaugural Event & Corporate ESG Fireside Chat

This event is a celebration of officially launching the Women in Cleantech and Sustainability, Los Angeles Chapter. As part of this celebration we are hosting a fireside chat on working in Corporate Sustainability and the growing importance of this function. Jennifer Johnson, WCS Board Member will facilitate a fireside chat with Navi Uppal, North American Sustainability at the Honda Motor Company.
🧶 Make Mend II: Tools of the Trade
When: Fri, Nov 17th from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM

Participants in the second Make Mend II workshop will learn how to create tools including table looms, drop spindles, and knitting needles that will be used on unraveled, shredded, and transformed old clothing and cloth from the first workshop. The spinning circle from the first workshop will continue, and special guests will demonstrate and teach introductory weaving, knitting, and spinning skills. New participants are welcome, too! Make Mend II carries on the popular series of workshops in which faculty, staff, and students from the USC Roski School of Art and Design lead sessions on unraveling, spinning, weaving, stitching, needlework, and other techniques to renew, reuse, and repurpose textiles. No experience is necessary, and light refreshments will be served.
🎶 X'ene's Witness

X’ene’s Witness is a contemporary opera by artist Justen Leroy that emphasizes Black Environmentalism within the Anthropocene. The performance utilizes sound and movement to express the unfiltered emotion and aims to create space for climate consciousness without words. Composed by Leroy and Alexander Hadyn, the score alludes to contemporary anxieties and terror, while X’ene Sky lends voice and piano as the oracle for Earth’s expression.

🚲 ASCE OC Sustainability Committee: Bike Ride Along the Santa Ana River Trail
When: Sat, Nov 18th from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Where: 6395 East La Palma Avenue, Anaheim, CA
Join the ASCE Orange County Sustainability Committee for a bike ride event to promote active transportation and explore the scenic trails in OC. The route is a round trip between Yorba Regional Park and Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC). The event starts at 8:00 am and includes a short talk about the Santa Ana River (SAR) trail route and the completed SAR widening project. Participants will ride along the SAR trail, cross the pedestrian bridge, take a scenic detour through Anaheim Coves Park, and head back to the starting point.
