This Week in Depth
🌳 Urban Forestry for Changing Times Symposium
When: Thu, September 5th from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM
Where: Angeles National Forest Headquarters (Supervisor's Office), 701 North Santa Anita Avenue Arcadia, CA 91006
Join a diverse group of researchers, practitioners, community members, and representatives from government and nonprofit organizations for a day of stimulating panel discussions and networking opportunities. Topics will include: the state of urban forestry research; science delivery & communication; urban forest equity; urban forest management planning; and more. The day will also include interactive breakout sessions to identify new researcher-practitioner collaborations and opportunities for engagement with LA City and County as they make future decisions about urban forest management.
📈 Making Energy-Efficient Choices During Design
When: Thu, September 6th from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM
Where: Online
This interactive course demonstrates how early design decisions can achieve energy efficiency goals within budget and time constraints, using live polling and energy modeling simulations. Identifying energy efficiency measures while balancing real-world constraints such as client budgets and time constraints poses challenges to any project team. This interactive course demonstrates how energy efficiency goals—when addressed beginning early in design—can be successfully achieved, saving valuable resources. The session introduces how comparative analysis assists in achieving energy conservation goals alongside factors that drive energy use. A case study building will be presented, including energy conservation strategies available for consideration. Participants will utilize live polling to assemble “bundles” of selected energy efficiency measures to play out what-if scenarios, discussing the merits and challenges of each bundle.
🍷 Re:wild Your Campus Happy Hour Fundraiser

Are you ready to deepen your understanding of climate change in a fun, engaging way before the official start of LA Climate Week? 🌎 Whether you're a newcomer to climate science or an expert, our Climate Fresk Workshop is the perfect way to kick off the week. Understanding the complexity of climate change is crucial for taking meaningful action. While many of us know the basics — like CO2 emissions and global warming — there's so much more to explore at a systemic level. This workshop offers a hands-on, interactive experience where you'll collaborate with fellow participants to build a comprehensive picture of climate change. Guided by trained facilitators, you'll join a small group to connect the dots between causes, effects, and solutions. This 3-hour activity, based on the latest IPCC report, turns intricate scientific concepts into a dynamic learning experience. By the end, you'll have a clearer, more detailed understanding of climate change, and a strong foundation for the week ahead.
🧺 LA Climate Community Picnic
When: Sun, September 8th from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM
Where: Griffith Park Merry-Go-Round, 4730 Crystal Springs Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90027
Join us for a heartwarming start to LA Climate Week at our LA Climate Community Picnic at Griffith Park! There's no better way to connect with new climate friends than by gathering outdoors, sharing our personal climate journeys, and enjoying a relaxing afternoon together under the shade of beautiful pine trees. Bring along your favorite picnic foods and snacks to share as we connect over good food and great conversations. We will make some time to build new connections with a quick speed meeting activity to get to know each other, followed by small breakout groups where we can dive a bit deeper into what brought us here. It’s all about creating a supportive community as we begin this fun-filled week. We'll meet right by the merry-go-round! Our group will find a shady spot to setup some picnic blankets.
