Join FoLAR and local environmental educator, Jason “journeyman” Wise for a guided LA River walk on the topic of Queer Ecology! Queer Ecology is the study of everything in nature that subverts cultural expectations about how the natural world should work. This includes more newsworthy examples like gay penguins, but it goes much deeper – exploring the roles of males and females in both animals and plants, the transitioning of animals, insects and plants from one sex to another, and even why we gender anything at all. Most of all, it’s a discussion about how human society defines the natural world within its own cultural structures and limits, and how learning from nature can help free us from those unnatural rules.

🔥 Wildfire Resilience Resource Day
When: Sat, June 15th from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM
Where: Theodore Payne Foundation, 10459 Tuxford Street Los Angeles, CA 91352 United States
This informative class and demonstration by the Theodore Payne Foundation explores the Botany of Fire: How California native plants have evolved in close relationship to fire. Native plant species are able to come back following a fire, including shrubs and trees known as crown resprouters. Seeds of many native plant species are fire-responsive, meaning that they only "wake up" and sprout after a burn. In fact, some of our most spectacular wild flowers are endemic fire followers, which means that they only occur in the post-fire landscape, waiting quietly as seeds in the soil for years to reappear in massive numbers after a burn!
