Hi friends,
While COP28 is unfolding in Dubai, we’re holding the fort and doing important ground work locally. While COP28 is unfolding in Dubai, we’re doing our very best to move to the next best possibility. A soulful conversation, a meaningful investment, a resource well spent, an impactful policy moving forward, a piece of trash picked up: every day, every week might look different. On this journey, connect with like-minded peers in Los Angeles at one the upcoming events! Here are our picks this week:

Learn about the impacts of extreme heat on students and school communities, understand evidence-based strategies for heat-resilient schools, and gather ideas for impactful policy opportunities in California and beyond.
On Thursday, attend the 📽️ screening of three student-directed short films featuring nonprofit organizations in California: We Explore Earth, Garden School Foundation, and LA River Art Public Project.
On Sunday, hop on a 🚴♂️ bike and explore the natural forces and processes that have shaped and are still shaping the coastline with Will Selby author of "Rediscovering the Golden State: California Geography" and Climate Action Santa Monica.

Community Shoutouts
Go on a Bike Tour with Climate Action Santa Monica
A group of Santa Monica residents concerned about the growing threat of climate change founded CASM in the spring of 2023. Striving to effect transformative local climate action through community engagement, CASM works on three main goals:
To reduce greenhouse gas emissions and facilitate 100% clean renewable energy consumption by all sectors on the Santa Monica Community. To support adoption of technologies that reduce carbon emissions.
To support policies, practices and built infrastructure that create a climate friendly future Santa Monica for all.
To engage the community in opportunities to take meaningful action through jobs, advocacy, events, and demonstration of solutions that inspire and motivate others.
Support CASM and join the next Bike Tour on Sunday December 17th with author and Earth Science Professor Emeritus William Selby!

🌱 Distribution and Ecology of Vernal Pools
When: Thu, Dec 14th from 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM
Where: Online
Kaleidoscopes were a favorite holiday gift for children many years ago. They displayed a quickly and constantly changing series of brilliantly colored patterns. The metaphor works for California’s vernal pool landscapes. Carol Witham will help us to explore the short-lived, weird-looking, fascinating fauna that evolved millions of years ago, and dazzling swaths of tens of thousands of tiny flowers that change from week to week through a two- to- three month “season”. This tour of California vernal pools will answer questions such as “what makes a vernal pool” and “why are they found almost nowhere but California” plus explore vernal pools from throughout the state.
🦋 Arlington Garden Weekend Workshops
When: Sat, Dec 16th from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Where: 5413 South Avalon Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90011
Learn regenerative gardening by doing it yourself with other rad volunteers! On Saturday, December 16th from 9:00am to 12:00pm join us for the last Weekend Workshops volunteer event of 2023. We will learn how to identify undesirable weeds (typically non-native plants that outcompete garden plants) at Arlington and environmentally beneficial (or at least low-impact) ways to remove them! Arlington does not use herbicides, but that doesn't mean that every weed gets pulled by the roots. Participation is free and getting dirt-ish in a beautiful garden is always enjoyable! We’re hoping for a good turnout of gardening muscle right before the holidays. If you're looking to get outside, combat weeds, get some exercise, or meet some new cool plant folks.
🥕 South LA Wetlands Composting Workshop
When: Sat, Dec 16th from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM
Where: 5413 South Avalon Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90011
It's easy to compost at home! Join a free workshop to learn how. Our workshops will teach you how to turn kitchen scraps and yard trimmings into a nutrient-rich soil amendment. Home composting is taught by a team of ten rotating LA Sanitation & Environment green waste specialists.
