LA Fires: Resources & Building Resilience

  • LA Climate Resilience: Collective Healing & Conversation: on March 1st, Healing Lahaina and Stranded Astronaut Productions are creating a space for anyone experiencing grief, anxiety, or concern in relation to the recent Los Angeles fires and the climate crisis. This event is open to those who have been directly impacted by the wildfires through evacuation or loss of your home, anyone who is distressed by witnessing the recent events, and individuals who identify as climate advocates or want to step into that role. Registration here.

  • TreePeople launched the Wildfire Resilience Fund. Environmental restoration will be key to transform disturbed wilderness areas into healthy, biodiverse native ecosystems, and to prevent future fire from being widespread and severe. Learn more about how organizations like TreePeople support: invasive species management, localized seed collection, seed propagation, planting and long-term site management, as well as fire resilience and watershed health while bringing the community together.

In today’s world of endless information and opinions, it’s easy for facts and science to get lost or reshaped—kind of like a game of telephone. We see this happening with climate issues where details can morph over time, mostly unintentionally. It also happens with history, President's Day being the perfect example. Originally established in the 1880s to honor George Washington’s birthday (and later Abraham Lincoln’s), the shift toward “Presidents’ Day” began with the Uniform Monday Holiday Bill in 1968, which aimed to provide federal workers with more long weekends. Despite Congress rejecting the official renaming, retailers and public perception transformed it into the broader holiday we know today—blurring its original intent and making it seem like a celebration of all Presidents, not just Washington and Lincoln. The same thing happens with climate conversations—science gets misinterpreted, solutions get watered down, and key facts sometimes fade away. This is why it’s always worth pausing to ask: Where did this come from, and what’s the real story?

LA Fires: Resources & Building Resilience

New LA Wildfire Recovery Commission prioritizes resilience & equity

Los Angeles County and UCLA have launched an independent Blue Ribbon Commission to support a resilient and sustainable recovery from the devastating 2025 LA wildfires. Led by UCLA’s Luskin Center for Innovation and Sustainable LA Grand Challenge, the Commission will develop expert-driven policy recommendations for fire-safe reconstruction, resilient infrastructure, faster rebuilding, and equitable recovery. With a focus on climate-smart solutions and community engagement, the initiative aims to rebuild Los Angeles stronger and more prepared for future wildfires.

📊 AB 1757 Methods for Tracking and Assessing the Effects of Land Management on California’s Landscapes

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) will host a two hour-long virtual listening session to gather input on data sources and analytical methods that California could use to track and assess the effects of land management on California’s landscapes. Pursuant to AB 1757, CARB is tasked with developing standard methods for state agencies to consistently track greenhouse gas emissions and reductions, carbon sequestration, and, where feasible and in consultation with the Natural Resources Agency and the Department of Food and Agriculture, additional benefits from natural and working lands over time. January 20th will be an interesting day as we simultaneously celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, see Donald Trump inaugurated for a second time, and continue to witness and engage with LA wildfire response and recovery efforts. It may be a day of many emotions, which we hope you can channel into positive action.

Traditionally, MLK Day is seen as a day of service, celebrating the life of Dr. King and his legacy of advocating for civil rights and bringing hope and healing to our country, and working to bring that spirit into the present day to further uplift our communities. We hope that this Monday you can take one action of service for your community. Whether that looks like volunteering to help with wildfire recovery and response, working to restore natural areas in your community, or even helping a relative or neighbor with cooking or yard work. Every act of service and kindness creates a ripple effect and contributes to our shared humanity and hope for a better future.

We also hope that you can continue this spirit of volunteerism, service and community-building in the weeks and months to come. We need engaged citizens committed to climate action, social justice, and scaling the solutions that already exist. Remember, as Dr. King said, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice”. For this to be true, join us as we tackle climate head-on, together.

As fires continue to blaze through our region, we are holding space for the immense loss and heartbreak that so many are experiencing. Families have been displaced, neighborhoods altered, beloved trails and landscapes scarred, and wildlife left struggling in a disoriented, unfamiliar world.

Our deepest gratitude goes out to the firefighters, public workers, and first responders: heroes from near and far, including teams from Canada and Mexico, who have tirelessly put their lives on the line to protect our communities. And to everyone affected, we send our heartfelt condolences. The devastation is hard to fathom.

The scale and intensity of these fires remind us of the ways climate change intensifies the challenges we face. While it didn’t light the match, it played a critical role in setting the stage: relentless drought, powerful Santa Ana winds, and shifting weather patterns combined to fuel an unstoppable firestorm. Our city wasn’t prepared for this magnitude of destruction. This isn’t just a single event, it’s part of a pattern, with fires, floods, droughts, and landslides increasing in both frequency and severity.

Los Angeles is a city of dreamers and doers, a place where resilience runs deep. It is a place where nature and humanity coexist. Together, we must rethink the fragile balance. We can protect and heal the beautiful places we love while building a future that’s better equipped to weather what lies ahead.

Whether it’s by volunteering, donating, or spreading awareness, every effort matters- today, tomorrow, and in the months of recovery to come.

At Climate Tech Cities Los Angeles, we’re committed to bringing people together to face these challenges, understand the causes and consequences of climate change, and spark action. We’ll continue to share about all the climate and sustainability events happening in the Greater Los Angeles area, and more. Through connection, education, and solutions, we aim to build a more resilient city and inspire others to take part.

🎬 Screening: Great Pacific Garbage Patch Documentary

Captain Charles Moore discovered what has become known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in 1997, and has been researching and educating about the dangers of plastic pollution since. Join Moore Institute for Plastic Pollution Research for a documentary on the massive accumulation of trash in the Pacific Ocean followed by live Q&A with the man who discovered it.

🧬 eDNA Sampling Community Science Event

Interested in meeting volunteers and participating in cutting-edge science? Heal The Bay are excited to reintroduce a fun and social event that will reoccur monthly in the Malibu MPA transects! Heal the Bay is partnering with UCLA again to collect seawater samples in Malibu for an eDNA scientific testing program with PhD candidate Moriah Byrd. All marine life leaves traces of DNA in their environment. eDNA water testing analyzes the quantification of biodiversity in a standardized way within a marine ecosystem, making it an incredible tool to monitor Marine Protected Areas. Sign the Heal the Bay eDNA Waiver and attend a volunteer orientation before attending this event.

🌻 Weekend Workshops at Arlington Garden

Weekend Workshops is the weekend program at Arlington Garden. Workshops include volunteer projects, speaker or panel events, and small tutorials focused on topics related to our mission, regenerative gardening, and the cultural heritage of gardening. No prior experience is necessary for volunteer projects, but space is limited. Registration is strongly encouraged. Please bring water (there is a water bottle refill station but no drinking fountain), weather appropriate clothing, sunscreen, and gloves.

Join FoLAR and San Fernando Valley Audubon Society for an educational walk about the birds that call the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve their home, or their home only for the season. This walk will talk about what birds migrate to the area during the winter time and hopefully see some of them in flight! We will provide binoculars, but feel free to bring your own!

👔 Commission on Sustainability, Environmental Justice, and the Environment

The event is an open member meeting for the Commission on Sustainability, Environmental Justice and the Environment. It acts in an advisory capacity on sustainability, environmental programs and policy issues. The Commission closely monitors the Santa Monica’s Sustainable City Plan and advises the Council on plan implementation. The Commission on Sustainability, Environment Justice, and the environment is an expert panel made up of seven (7) members selected by the Santa Monica City Council.

We hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving celebrating with family and friends, sharing good food and good company. Sharing gratitude is important throughout the year, but this week in particular we really wanted to share our gratitude for the LA Climate Tech Cities community, and for all those who are putting in the work to research, design, and implement climate solutions both in and outside of LA!

There are thousands of folks actively turning the tide on climate in our local communities, creating startups, working from within corporate giants, leading research at our universities, and leading by example in our local government agencies. What we’d really like to highlight this week, however, are those who are working in nonprofits!

Nonprofit employees are leaders in the space and often wear many hats, pushing against funding, staffing, and time constraints to continue to do good work in our communities. Whether a community-based grassroots organization or a more established NGO, nearly all nonprofits are reliant on individual donors to help them bring their mission to life. And there’s no better time to give than the present! As climate becomes a more pressing topic each day, it’s more important now than ever before to support these organizations that are leading the change. This Tuesday is #GivingTuesday, a day where you will likely get dozens of emails and see countless social media posts from nonprofits showcasing their impact and asking you for an end of year gift to support their mission. Our challenge to you is to give to at least one environmental nonprofit this week. Whether you can afford to give $5 or $500, your contributions help our community build up this movement and keep it going!

Join the Larta Institute for their grand ecosystem gathering next Monday and Tuesday, Dec 9 and 10. By engaging with communities on the frontlines of today’s most urgent environmental and health challenges, the event ECO aims to identify and accelerate groundbreaking innovations that can make a real impact. 🦪 Prying Into the Private Lives of Mussels and Oysters

To many people, shellfish such as oysters and mussels seem like they’re just rocks with food inside. But before they arrive on a dinner table, those animals spend years stuck to rocks, piers, boats, and each other, where they make a living sucking up whatever happens to be floating by in the water. It's not a glamorous life by any measure, but mussels and oysters are doing their part to keep our bays and coasts lively and productive, while having to avoid all sorts of threats to their survival. Using cutting-edge technology (and some old-fashioned methods), we can gain a window into the lives of these shellfish, and learn about how they cope with changing temperatures, salinity, oxygen, and even human pollution. With modern internet-connected oysters, we can keep tabs on their behavior in local estuaries and bays and look for changes in behavior that might be associated with a variety of different stressors.

This last week has been a challenging one for many of us who are passionate about working to curb climate change and associated social issues. We hope that you have been making space for yourself as you process the election results, and that you find solace in community. We also wanted to showcase the progress that continues to happen for climate, especially at a local level. Californians voted to approve Proposition 4, a $10 billion bond measure to finance water, clean energy, wildfire protection, sea level rise mitigation, and additional environmental projects throughout the state. This, coupled with the election of many local officials who have climate near the top of their agenda, show that our region will continue fighting for a more sustainable world for people and for the natural ecosystems alike.

We hope that you can latch onto that hope and share it by engaging with the climate community and beyond here locally, which is at the heart of what we at LA Climate Tech Cities strive to foster with each and every newsletter we share, and with each connection that comes from it. There are so many passionate people in LA and the broader SoCal region, and by sharing our skills, passions, and talents, and connecting with people across industries and backgrounds, we can continue to innovate, connect, and move the needle for climate.

🛶 LA River Arts Annual Benefit

The Board of Directors of LA River Arts invite you to our annual fundraiser. Spend the afternoon viewing the flora growing alongside the Los Angeles River through the work of LA-based artist Jenny Yurshansky. Jenny will present audio recordings paired with actual plants along the river. You’ll listen to the plant’s perspective! The stories trace their journey to California and their experiences once they settled into the landscape, offering a reflection of the river that is both cultural and botanical. These recordings are part of a larger project that identifies 133 plants on the California Invasive Species Advisory Committee’s list of invasive species. Curator Lucia Fabio supported our efforts to develop this site-specific event.

🔭 MPA Watch Community Science Training

Do you like science AND long walks on the beach? Then join Heal the Bay’s community science program, MPA Watch! Volunteers will be trained on how to collect data while walking along the most beautiful beaches of Malibu and Palos Verdes. Monitoring done by MPA Watchers helps encourage enforcement and regulation around marine protected areas (MPAs), also known as “underwater Yosemites.” Become a volunteer by attending the two-part training program, which includes one virtual classroom training and one field training session. All training materials will be provided. Attendance to both sessions is required to become an MPA Watch certified volunteer, as well as attendance to Heal the Bay’s New Volunteer Orientation. You may attend a New Volunteer Orientation before or after attending our MPA Watch training.

🎨 Exhibition - Lauren Bon’s Concrete is Fluid

Honor Fraser proudly presents Concrete is Fluid, a solo exhibition by the eco-hacktivist Lauren Bon. Bon’s post-industrial earthworks, photographs, and sculptures index two decades of collaborative interventions and champion the Earth’s immutable cycles of upheaval, abundance, and reparation.

🌿 Trail to Table: Native Plant Walk & Tasting

Explore the beauty of nature with our guided Native Plant Walk by our friends at TreePeople around the reservoir. Learn about the various plants and their importance in our ecosystem. 🐞 Garden Weekend Workshops

Weekend Workshops is the weekend program at Arlington Garden. Workshops include volunteer projects, speaker or panel events, and small tutorials focused on topics related to our mission, regenerative gardening, and the cultural heritage of gardening. No prior experience is necessary for volunteer projects, but space is limited, and you are strongly encouraged to sign up for free in advance. Please bring water (there is a water bottle refill station but no drinking fountain), weather appropriate clothing, sunscreen, and gloves.

🧶 Algae Yarn Crochet Workshop: Conceptual Exploration of Bio-Materials

A unique, hands-on crochet workshop where art, sustainability, and material innovation meet. PST ART: Art & Science Collide

🫘 African Food Legacies in the Americas

Professor Judith Carney will present a talk on African agency in creolizing the foodways of the Americas, the ways the enslaved people made African foods part of the New World dietary traditions, and the role of subaltern food plots in making this possible in plantation societies. Light refreshments will be served. Distinguished Research Professor Emerita Judith Carney’s research centers on African ecology and development, food security, gender and agrarian change, and African contributions to New World environmental history. She is the author of over 100 scholarly articles and two books: Black Rice: The African Origins of Rice Cultivation in the Americas (Harvard University Press, 2001) and In the Shadow of Slavery: Africa’s Botanical Legacy in the Atlantic World (University of California Press, 2009).

While California communities face the ongoing and growing threat of wildfire and other climate-related disasters, the funding landscape for long-term planning, infrastructure improvements, and capacity building for resilience is unpredictable. ♻️ Decarbonization & ESG Fundamentals Workshop for Small Businesses

Many companies are facing increasing pressure to understand the environmental impacts of their work, especially in identifying their contributions to greenhouse gas emissions through Scope 1, Scope 2, and now Scope 3 emissions calculations. However, smaller businesses often lack the knowledge required to track emissions contributions and report to their clients as part of their emissions reporting. Brightworks Sustainability has partnered with USGBC-CA to present a unique workshop designed specifically for small businesses. The venture capital firm SOSV is hosting it’s third annual SOSV Climate Tech Summit on October 14-18. The event is free, online, and designed to encompass the full breadth of the climate startup ecosystem. The summit will bring together top investors, founders, and scientists to discuss climate tech as an emerging category for startups and venture investing. Our goal is to deepen venture, academic, corporate, and media understanding of the accomplishments and potential of startups in climate tech. Braiding Sweetgrass has been on the NYT nonfiction bestseller's list for several years straight, and for good reason.Braiding Sweetgrass offers how we can understand the world through a plurality of knowledges: indigenous wisdom, western science, and the wisdom plants and fungi behold. This book taught the Mycoverse so much how to be in better relationship with the land, with our community, and ultimately, how to be in better relationship with fungi – a question that has driven the Exploring the Mycoverse since it's inception three years ago. The impact of Braiding Sweetgrass on the Mycoverse community cannot be overstated. Since our collective reading in March 2022, it has remained a constant presence in our hearts and minds. It has significantly shaped our understanding of the natural world and ourselves, becoming a cornerstone in navigating the Mycoverse.
